Your handset which you use to make and receive voice calls is technically a mobile though you may feel confident if it is called a smartphone, right? The truth is that having a high end mobile that is a smartphone has become some sort of a status symbol though it is equally true that a smartphone is much more than a mobile these days. Many people are confused with the nomenclature and cannot make out differences between a basic mobile and a smartphone. This article will attempt to highlight these differences to help a new user to buy either of the two devices depending upon his budget, and of course his requirement.

There has been a virtual rage for smartphones and people are willing to spend more to have a smartphone than remaining content with a basic mobile phone. This is because a smartphone, with its enhanced computing capabilities and features, makes life easier and obliterates the need to carry several devices along with one self. Basically a mobile is a phone that frees one from the clutches of wires and provides mobility to a person. He can carry the mobile wherever he is, remaining connected with his friends all the time. But it doesn鈥檛 hurt to have some additional features in your mobile, does it? If you have the feature of Bluetooth in your mobile, you can receive a call even when your hands are tied doing something else. Similarly, wouldn鈥檛 it be nice to be able to log on to internet to send or check on your emails? Surely camera on a mobile are a luxury, but isn鈥檛 it nice to be able to carry a smartphone with digital cameras that can not just shoot extremely clear photographs but also record video clips of life鈥檚 memorable moments? You are spare from carrying a digital camera along. And while you are chatting on instant messenger with your friends, you can use the front camera in the front of a smartphone to actually send video feed of yourself to the friend which is nothing short of a miracle.

You can actually make video calls with a friend sitting thousands of miles away from you and see him talking to you with the help of a smartphone. This is simply not possible with a basic mobile phone. Some basic mobiles do allow the facility of multi media messaging, but the ease with which one can remain connected with friends on various social networking sites with the help of smartphones is really amazing.

The concept of a mobile is changing and it is no more a device to make or receive calls. A smartphone combines the facilities and features of a PDA to a basic phone so you get more features such as a web browser, navigational abilities with GPS and A-GPS, HDMI capabilities (you can watch the HD videos recorded by the digital camera of your smartphone instantly on your HDTV, e-reader (so you get to enjoy exciting books on the net), connect your friends on various social networking sites, and so on.

There is no standard definition of a smartphone and today basic mobile phones are slowly and gradually incorporating features of smartphones that were exclusive to smartphones only a few months ago. So the features that your smartphone boasts may tomorrow appear in a basic mobile, which is why it is difficult to say that this or the other feature is exclusive to smartphones only. Today鈥檚 basic mobile phones boast of cameras, MP3, MP4, stereo FM, Bluetooth, GPS, etc that was unthinkable only an year ago. But all such features are better and faster in a smartphone which today has advanced so much that we are talking of dual core processor in a smartphone. It is better to call smartphone of today a pocket computer more than mobile phone.
